Slipped Disc and its Chiropractic Treatment
by Greg C. Molis
http://www.yahoo.com

A disc is a supportive cushion between the vertebrae of the
spine. A bulged or a slipped disc happens due to damage to
the spine because of an injury. The slipped disc condition
actually means that this supportive cushion is displaced
from its actual position. This disc can press against the
nerve and cause inflammation of the nerve, causing pain
along the path of the nerve, often traveling into the leg.
When a patient with a slipped disc condition visits a
chiropractor, he wants to get the slipped disc adjusted
back to its original position and get relief from the pain
this is giving him. For such a patient the chiropractor
will first take the history of other medical conditions
that the patient has had. He will also do an orthopedic and
neurological testing.

Chiropractors use a variety of methods to arrive at the
diagnosis. Not only do they go in for conventional medical
texts such as x-rays and MRI~s if required. Along with it
they also use certain other diagnostic methods which are
unique to chiropractic care. These include motion and
static palpation where they perform tests on the muscle
after palpating them to check for pelvic balance and find
out if any leg is shorter than the other. Besides this they
also use postural analysis to check the patient~s posture.
After all these tests have been done then only does the
chiropractor decide on the treatment.

After the above information has been analyzed at length the
chiropractor tries to say if the patient has suffered a
disc injury or is the disc slipped from its position or
not. He will also need to diagnose the type of disc injury
that may have occurred. The type of disc injury will
determine the care/treatment approach that the chiropractor
will take. For some patients conservative chiropractic care
would be fine. But in cases where the patient has advanced
loss of strength, sensation, and reflexes, the chiropractor
will refer the patient to a spine surgeon (for evaluation)
before starting a treatment program and schedule for the
patient.

To treat the disc conditions gentle program of low-force
techniques are followed in chiropractic. Chiropractors use
their low force adjusting techniques in an organized
protocol of evaluation and treatment to treat slipped disc
conditions. While giving the treatment patients are
continuously asked questions regarding their progress and
are often prescribed special stretching exercises to be
done at home. Chiropractic treatment evaluates the progress
of the patient using neurological and chiropractic tests
and comparing them with the initial findings. If the
chiropractor feels that the patient is not responding the
way he should be, then he refers him for further imaging
studies or even a spine consultant.
